LES of a Meso Combustion Chamber with a Detailed Chemistry Model: Comparison between the Flamelet and EDC Models

چکیده
The goal of this paper is to contribute to the design of high-performance mesocombustors, a field currently under rapid development, in particular for propulsion, e.g., for UAVs, and micro/meso-electrical power generators. This study is focused on a cylindrical combustor of 29 cm, fuelled by methane and air, which provides 2 kW of thermal power. The device was entirely designed and built at the Sapienza University of Rome and coupled with an ultra-micro turbine. Two 3D LES simulations with detailed chemistry are presented. They differ only for the combustion models, so that a model comparison can be carried out. The calculated maximum temperature inside the chamber, the gas exhaust temperature and the combustion efficiency are compared and discussed. The results, reported at two different physical times, show the effects of the different combustion models, which predict different temperature and species concentration maps, but similar values for the combustion efficiency. Thermal, chemical and kinematic maps show that the Eddy Dissipation Concept allows for a more accurate estimatation of the performance parameters for application to first-order design procedures.

Three different approaches for modeling diesel engine combustion are compared against cylinder pressure, NOx emissions, and simultaneous optical diagnostic images from a heavy-duty, DI diesel engine. A characteristic time combustion (KIVA-CTC) model, a representative interactive flamelet (KIVA-RIF) model, and direct integration using detailed chemistry (KIVA-CHEMKIN) were integrated into the sa...

The current design of gas-turbine (GT) systems is driven by the need for increased powerdensities, improved fuel-efficiencies, and reduced life cycle costs and environmental impact. Computational techniques have the potential for providing valuable information for the design of GT combustion systems, if adequate models are available. متن کاملPrediction of Pollutant Emissions from Industrial Furnaces Using Large Eddy Simulation
Accurate prediction of pollutant emissions from turbulent combustion around complex geometries is of great practical interest. Here, an industrial furnace with rich-burn/quick-quench/lean-burn combustion for NOx reduction is simulated. Large eddy simulation (LES) is employed as the simulation tool since it outperforms Reynolds-Averaged-Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations in capturing large-scale u...
متن کاملLarge-Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Combustion
In recent years, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) has been successfully applied to non-premixed and premixed turbulent combustion problems [1, 2, 3]. In most technical combustion applications, the pure non-premixed or premixed combustion models are no longer valid, since partially premixed combustion has to be taken into account. An example is the stabilization region of a lifted non-premixed flame....
